Associate Attorney – Civil Defense – West Hartford, CT; Tarrytown, NY; Princeton, NJ

Gfeller Laurie LLP, a dynamic and growing litigation boutique law firm with a national practice, seeks confident associate attorney with 3-6 years of civil defense litigation experience for the firm’s Connecticut (West Hartford), New York (Tarrytown and Manhattan) and New Jersey (Princeton) offices. Successful candidates will assist in defending clients in a wide range of civil defense litigation matters from personal injury claims to complex commercial disputes.

Our associate attorneys within this practice are highly valued contributors, responsible for day-to-day case management, reporting to clients, handling written discovery, attending depositions, court appearances, trial preparation and trials. Strong analytical, organizational, research and writing skills as well as a genuine interest in developing sophisticated experience and skills in civil defense litigation contexts are crucial for these positions. Associate attorneys will work closely with the firm’s civil litigation partners and therefore, successful candidates must be well-versed in all aspects of their state’s applicable practice rules and procedures.

West Hartford, CT – Legal Administrative Assistant

Gfeller Laurie LLP, a boutique litigation law firm with a regional presence throughout the Northeast, seeks a self-motivated Legal Administrative Assistant with a minimum of 5 years’ litigation experience in Connecticut state and federal court matters to assist the firm’s attorneys in administrative aspects of the firm’s active litigation practice.  Daily tasks vary, but generally include:

  • Formatting briefs, pleadings and other legal documents
  • E-filing legal documents (state, federal and appellate courts)
  • Calendaring dates and managing court reporter services for depositions
  • Processing, compiling and maintaining medical authorizations
  • Preparing draft correspondence to clients, counsel, courts, etc.
  • Editing legal services invoices
  • Processing expenses
  • Making travel arrangements
  • Answering phone calls
  • Managing incoming mail
  • Copying and filing
  • Tracking CLE requirements and attorneys’ fulfillment of same
  • Assisting with marketing and client development efforts

Successful candidates must have the following attributes/abilities:

  • Familiarity with state and federal court procedures

West Hartford, CT – Office Manager

The Office Manager is responsible for the day-to-day workflow, management, and development of the office administration staff including legal assistants and paralegals.

RESPONSIBILITIES:          

  • Manages and organizes office operations and procedures including, but not limited to, information management, filing systems, supplies, staffing, benefits.
  • Maintains office equipment.
  • Develops and manages central filing system including archives.
  • Assists in establishing and monitoring uniform correspondence procedures and style practices; clerical/administrative duties as needed including but not limited to answering phones, court efilings, preparing correspondence and memoranda, faxing, copying, and mailing.
  • Provides day-to-day guidance and oversight of supervised staff of 11; actively promotes and recognizes performance; assigns duties and assures staff conform to organizational policies and procedures; addresses complaints and resolve problems.
  • Keeps current on overall activities of the team, identifying problem areas and taking corrective actions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management; strong interaction with managing partner.

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience as legal assistant and/or office manager, including, ideally, some staff supervision experience.
  • Basic competence in duties and tasks of supervised employees.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to excellence and high standards.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving and analytical skills; able to manage priorities and workflow.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of various teams and committees.
  • Focused attention to detail.
