Mark D. Shifton Publishes Article on Statistical Extrapolation in For the Defense Magazine

News

Mark D. Shifton recently authored an article published in the February 2019 issue of For The Defense, a monthly magazine published by the Defense Research Institute. Mark’s article, Does (Sample) Size Matter? Identifying and Challenging Unreliable Methodologies Employed in Statistical Extrapolation, examines the common practice of expert witnesses in construction and products liability cases offering far-reaching opinions based on extrapolating the results from limited inspections, discusses the statistical and methodological flaws underpinning those opinions, and explains how to identify and challenge those expert opinions on the grounds of unreliability. Mark’s article was co-authored with Benjamin S. Wilner, Ph.D., a well-known economist and statistician with Alvarez & Marsal. A copy of the article may be viewed here.
