Partner Mark Shifton to Speak at CLM Construction Conference in San Diego about Climate Change

News

Partner Mark Shifton has been invited to speak at the CLM Construction Conference in San Diego as a panelist on Thursday during Session 1 about climate change. Mark maintains a practice in the area of green building and sustainable development and routinely advises developers, design professionals, and contractors about the rapidly-evolving standards and developments in green building. He is accredited as a LEED Green Associate by the Green Building Certification Institute, and has spoken widely on construction and green building issues.

Titled ‘Climate Change: Trends and Strategies to Limit Claims and Mitigate Risk’, the program summary is: Climate change is defined as long-term change in weather patterns and the effects of these changes.  We experience the effects of climate change in the form of rising sea levels, more intense storms, floods, and temperature extremes. These changes pose certain risks that impact design professionals, owners, and contractors. There is the potential for claims against design professionals if they do not account for the future impact of climate change. Our discussion will address the emerging risks of climate change and ways design professionals, contractors, and owners may allocate risk in contracts at the beginning of the project.  Other issues to be discussed are climate change-related laws concerning carbon emissions.
